Clamouse

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT IN DEVELOPMENT
Über das Projekt

A beautiful cave, full of strange concretions can be found alongside the Gorge d’Herault between the villages of St Jean de Fos and St Guilhem le Desert. The cave is still being washing out by the river that runs along the bottom of it and during the winter months part of the cave is closed off because the chambers are full of water. As well as the normal stalactites and stalagmites, you’ll find some other formations in the grotte, including aragonites, spiky concretions that resemble sea urchins and helictites that look like a jumbled mass of spaghetti.

The cave was discovered in 1945 by the Montpellier Caving Club, but the name Clamouse dates back a lot further. In Occitan Clamouse means a woman who shouts or screams – the noise the cave’s river makes when it floods. Legend has it that a young shepherd used to send a sheep to his poor mother via the underground river. One day it was the shepherd’s body that made its way downstream to his mother, and in her despair she wandered the caves screaming for a long time afterwards.
